Yarmouth is one of the oldest towns on the island being the first to be granted a Royal Charter in 1135. Situated at the mouth of the western River Yar, the commercial port was once the island's busiest, however the town remained compact being restricted by the sea, the low-lying estuarine marshes to the landward side and the River Yar to the west.
