The
Padrao dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries)
was built in 1960 to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of
Henry the Navigator. The 52-m (170-ft) high monument
commemorates the mariners, royal patrons and all those who
participated in the rapid development of the Portuguese Age
of Discovery.
