Amsterdam founded as a small fishing village became the chief trading city of northern Europe and ultimately in the 17th century the centre of a massive empire. By the 18th century due to internal unrest and Napoleonic restrictions the city declined. Today tourists pour into Amsterdam to see the stunning art museums and enjoy the city nightlife.
