Shanghai is the largest metropolis in China with a population of more than 16 millions. After the first phase of development in the last century, Shanghai is now in the process of designing and constructing several remarkable projects of municipal infrastructure, including the Lupu Arch Bridge with a world-record span of 550 m; the first commercial route for magnetic trains connecting Pudong Airport with downtown; the Yangshan Deep Water Harbour and its sea-crossing passage; the southern railway station; the second phase in the extension of Pudong Airport; the World Financial Centre with a world-record height of 492 m, and many others. Most of them will be completed on schedule around 2004. These exciting structures should be an attraction and an inspiration to all interested parties and participants allowing discussion about some of the major infrastructure challenges of modern Shanghai and other metropolises.
