Sassari
is situated at the extreme North of Sardinia. The city’s appearance is
prevalently modern, but its historical centre is fascinating, with its characteristic
narrow streets. Amongst the most important and interesting monuments in the
historical centre, there is the Cathedral of S. Nicola in gothic style with
its large Spanish-baroque style facade from the seventeen hundreds; the Church
of S. Mary OF Bethlehem, one of the oldest in Sassari; the Ducal Palace and
the famous Rosello Fountain. The city’s territory is the largest in Italy;
along the western coast is the mining village of Argentiera, abandoned in 1962
and at present in the process, now well advanced, of being transformed into
a tourist attraction; the landscape around it of schistose rocks is barren,
wild and of great interest. It is possible to admire the beaches of the Cala
(Cove) of Argentiera, the Cala of Onanu and Porto Palmas. Sassari is positioned
on a wide plateau which extends as far as Porto Torres.
