Salzburg
is the capital of the Austrian state of the same name and is situated on the
northern edge of the Alps almost at the centre of Austria. The Austrian poet
and joint founder of the Salzburg Festival, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, called Salzburg
“the heart of the heart of Europe”. Thanks to its position at the
intersection of old European trade routes, Salzburg is easy to reach by rail,
car or by air. The city receives its visitors with international flair, traditional
elegance and countless points of interest. The fame Salzburg enjoys throughout
the world is due to the incomparable charm of its cityscape, the natural beauty
of its surroundings and the act of providence that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was
born here in 1756.
Beyond the large number of cultural events, there are museums of all kinds,
private and public galleries and folkloric events to enrich Salzburg’s
offerings. As a respected cultural city and meeting place for important specialist
trade fairs and exhibitions, Salzburg is full of activity all year round. A
fascinating experience is shopping in the unique old town with its exclusive
boutique shops. During every season the city of Salzburg, with its beautiful
environs, draws visitors with its special charm. Particularly in the summer
months it is, as host of the famous Salzburg Festival, the centre of the cultural
world. The hustle and bustle gives way in winter, when the tourist traffic has
passed, to a magical silence.
