The 'eternal
city' of Rome has been at the forefront of European history and culture for
more than 2000 years. The one thing you cannot escape from in Rome, is history.
This exciting metropolis oozes with it. But neither will you escape the hectic
vibrancy of the place with its anarchic traffic, its noise, its piazzas, its
fountains, its fabulous restaurants and all the other idiosyncrasies that
make Rome quite simply one of the most remarkable cities in the world. Whether
it's the Vatican, the colosseum, the Trevi fountain, Roman forts, Etruscan
tombs, Republican meeting rooms, early-Christian churches, Renaissance palaces,
Baroque basilicas, or the great swathe of artifacts left by the Roman Empire;
the sense of history which Rome provides is all embracing. Rome is situated
halfway down the Italian West Coast. While the city itself is huge, the historical
center is compact and easily accessible, and a walking tour of the city's
major historic and cultural sites is possible in one day.
Of course, Rome offers the visitor more than just history, with a wide selection
of typical Italian trattorie and laid-back cafes, where the locals can be
seen watching the world go by. It's a bustling city in which a great deal
of life takes place outdoors. Rome has a perfect climate, remaining relatively
mild in the winter and becoming pleasantly hot in the summer. At a distance
of only 12 miles from the coast, Rome is perfectly situated to combine the
hustle bustle of a major city with Mediterranean beaches.
