Welcome in Prague
in the Capitol of the Czech republic. The Metropolis of the Czech
Republic discloses to attentive visitors a lot of about the presence and no
less about the past too. The Prague City with its 1 214 600 inhabitants picturesque
lies along both riverside of the Vltava River covers an area of 497 km2 in
the Middle of Bohemia. Prague has many historical dominants. According to
the old popular sentence is Prague "hundred - spiked" . However
the reality convinces you how modest was the popular imagination. The historic
center of the town - the most significant urban reservation area - since 1992
has been included in the UNESCO list of the cultural and natural monuments
of the worldwide importance. For the 2000 was the Prague ranged with the cultural
town of Europe and this appreciating for the Czech Capital of Czech Republic
influences its life today.
Prague was composed from several former villages or small towns long time
ago. The central Bohemia enticed human to settlement already since primeval
stone period. From the 6th century grew up the residence of the Czech ancestors
on the opportune places of today's Prague. Later, after 870 year, was founded
the Prague castle. There was established bishopric in 973 year. In the 10th
century Vys¹ehrad Castle was established on the opposite bank of the Vltava
River - there is since 1085 year the seat of the first Czech king Vratislav
I. In 1172 was completed the stone bridge, which was the second one in the
central Europe - the Judith's bridge. In the 13th century from the old settlement
grew up two medieval towns with all the privileges: the Old Town and the Lesser
Town.
After the dying of the domestic dynasty of Premyslides succeeded in 1310th
year dynasty of Luxemburg: In the year 1338 was founded Old Town Hall - the
symbol of the civic autonomy, in the year the 1344 the Prague bishopric was
promoted to archbishopric and it was started the construction of St. Vitus'
Cathedral.
In the years 1346- 1378 ruled Charles IV., the Czech king and Roman Emperor.
In 1348 - he undertook found the New Town and Charles's University - the first
university in the central Europe. The attempts of the clergy at the church
reform, connected with the name of the famous Czech priest and preacher Jan
Hus, resulted into revolutionary movement in the years 1419- 1437. In the
year 1526 - the Hapsburg dynasty comes to the Czech throne and ruled to the
1918 when the declaration of independent Czechoslovakia, Prague became the
capitol of the new state.
The development
was broken due to the occupation by the Nazi German in the years 1939- 1945.
In 1948 - the Communist Party comes to power after the February coup and it
enforced the Soviet pattern of society. The Prague Spring, the only attempt
for the reform of the socialism in1968, was ended of the intervention of the
5 states of the Warsaw Treaty.
The "Velvet Revolution" in the year 1989 made a note of the end
of the power the Communist Party. It was the beginning for the democracy,
plurality political system and to the opening form the private of economics.
January 1st, 1993 - was the Czech and Slovak federal republic divided and
established the new independent Czech Republic.
