Door
of the Sicily, place of spells and legends, Messina, the modern city of the
Strait, offers to the visitor an imposing historical, monumental, and artistic
patrimony that finds in the Dome its higher symbol. Charming beaches together
with the splendid natural scenes of the inland have rendered famous this stretch
of Ionic coast. After Messina and the numerous towns lying along the coast,
Taormina is not to be missed, one of the most precious gems in the whole of
Sicily. The Greek Theatre is very famous: its dimension are notable, but above
all its position is extraordinary, allowing the sea and Mount Etna to be admired
in the back ground. Another famous locality is "Giardini Naxos". The
local cooking is flavoursome, obviously based on fish, among which swordfish
has pride of place.
