The
third biggest city in Cyprus, with a population of 60,000, Larnaka is a busy
industrial centre as well as a holiday resort. There are plenty of visitor attractions
in the centre and a reasonable beach by the seafront promenade, with other beach
and watersports facilities outside town to the north, along Larnaka Bay. Historians
believe that the city’s name, Larnaka, comes from the Greek word larnax,
meaning sarcophagus which makes sense, as there are so many tombs from ancient
Kition around here. If you’re visiting Larnaka on a short trip, you’d
be best staying in the central strip of town, along the seafront on Athinon
Avenue and the palm-tree-lined seafront promenade, and a few streets back from
the sea along Zinonos Kitieos Street. This is the area of town with most to
offer tourists, and Larnaka’s hot and busy streets away from this area
can be tiring, especially if you’re on foot.
