Lanzarote’s
most famous son was the sculptor, architect and artist César Manrique
and his influence can be felt all over the island. Captivated by the stunning
beauty of his home, he determined that tourist developments would harmonise
with the natural environment. You can see his creative genius at work at Jameos
del Agua, an underground volcanic grotto, once little more than a hole in the
ground. Manrique adapted the natural phenomenon to include a subterranean lake,
tropical gardens, a restaurant and a concert hall. Blind albino crabs live
in the waters of the lake.
