Catania
is also of ancient origin, but it has been damaged and destroyed over the centuries
by successive invasions and serious natural calamities (earthquake in 1693).
The earth of Catania is the Via Etna from which all the main shopping streets
depart, and onto which the spendid Villa Bellini also faces, with its luxuriant
park full of exotic, age-old and rare plants. Catania is a baroque city and
among the most important monuments there is the Cathedral. Here you can also
visit the house of Giovanni Verga, the famous verist novelist, and that of Vincenzo
Bellini, the great nineteenth-century musician.
