Compared to other European capital cities, Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia may at first appear relatively unimpressive, and even a little ugly. However, dig a little deeper and you will find that Bratislava old town is simply rich in culture.
Bratislava has elegant buildings, churches, cathedrals and fine restaurants that rival any in Europe. Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia, straddles both banks of the Danube River, a major European waterway, and the foothills of the Little Carpathian Mountains, which form the beginning of the huge Carpathian Arc. The Little Carpathians recede to the Danube lowlands on the Southeast, and to the Zahorska lowlands on the Northwest. Bratislava is situated near the state borders of four countries - Slovakia, Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic. The Slovak Republic is situated in Central Europe, sharing frontiers with the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland, Hungary and Ukraine.
