Belgrade,
the capital city of Serbia is an agglomeration of almost 2 million inhabitants.
The city lies at the confluence of the Sava and Danube. Though its present-day
appearance gives an impression of a completely new city, Belgrade is undoubtedly
one of the oldest towns in this part of Europe. Moreover, it is the third oldest
capital city of Europe after Athens and Rome.
The name "Beograd" is of Slav origin it means "White town"
and was introduced for the first time in the 9th century. Belgrade became the
capital of the medieval Serbian state in 1403. The city had been destroyed and
rebuilt 40 times in its history. Not a single other city in Europe was bombed
5 times only in the 20th century! Fortunately, in spite of such turbulent Belgrade's
past, there are quite a few historical monuments preserved in town today. Belgrade
Fortress with its structures of military architecture dating back to various
periods of history, the area of Old Town with its amazing mansions, palaces
and the Orthodox Cathedral are just a few attractive points that should not
be missed.
